After the release of the first Portsound Keyboard, YAMAHA established itself in the premier league of entertainer keyboards in 1984 with the PortaSound Regular (PSR) series as a further development of the PS series.
On the contrary to the PS models, the PSR series had larger Keyboards with regular key size. The PSR workstations were constantly enhanced and improved. Over the time the workstations were equipped with displays and were based on digital sampling.
To be able to compete with other manufacturer’s equipment, YAMAHA followed their 7000, 8000 and 9000 PSR Keyboards with the TYROS series.
With the launch of the TYROS YAMAHA emphasized that this series were neither synthesizers nor entertainment keyboards.
As a matter of fact with the further development of the PSR 9000 elements of both devices melted together in a digital workstation. The new TYROS generation resulted out of YAMAHAS concepts of a digital piano, a synthesizer and their own Portable Line.
With the TYROS series YAMAHA maintains its position in the production of entertainer keyboards with a multitude of applications in music production and performance.
Famous TYROS users are Dieter Bohlen, the member of the DSDS jury as well as the Austrian pop duo Brunner&Brunner among others.
According to the sound, YAMAHA introduced with the 61-Key TYROS as a digital workstation the MegaVoice technology. This technology offers realistic sound expressions of acoustic instruments.
MegaVoices contain multiply sampled sounds that exceed the average recorded sound e.g. of an acoustic guitar.
This means that the MegaVoice sounds are recorded closest to the original instruments to make it sound more realistic.
A guitar MegaVoice for example has fret noises etc. which are allocated to certain Velocity switches and therefore especially designed for MIDIfiles.
In terms of sound reality with the TYROS 2 Workstation YAMAHA has introduced the Super-Articulation-Voices as a further development of the MegaVoice technology.
This technology provides a realistic sound in real time. Single attributes of instruments are analyzed (e.g. Legato, Staccato etc.) and played by corresponding samples.
With release of the TYROS 3 YAMAHA introduced the Super-Articulation 2-Voices, especially designed for wind instruments and therefore expands the variety of instruments for this technology.
The possibility of audio recording in *WAV format also belongs to the improvements of the TYROS 4.
With this innovation recorded music pieces can be edited and played on a computer. In terms of music playback, the TYROS 4 also allows files in MP3 format.
The wide range of styles and voices has been continuously edited and expanded.
The most important technical innovations were next to the Enseble Voice function – a function that allows a real partitioning of instruments within an ensemble – the Organ World which completes the wide style range with various organ styles.
