XG (Sound format)

XG (Extended General MIDI) is YAMAHA’s extension of the GM format.

Specially adapted for YAMAHA devices, the XG format provides 618 instead of the initial 128 instruments and marks a standard for YAMAHA devices.

XG formats are backwards compatible, which means that a title in XG format can be played on all GM-capable devices. The XG parameters are usually ignored.
